U.S. Technical Support to Enhance Azerbaijan’s Capital Markets

USAID economist Rachel Bahn delivered opening remarks at the First Consultative Donors’ Meeting on Azerbaijan’s Capital Market Development in May 2009.

On May 27, 2009, donor organizations convened for the First Consultative Donors’ Meeting on Azerbaijan’s Capital Market Development. Azerbaijan’s State Committee for Securities initiated the gathering, for which it received financial and technical support from USAID. Representatives from Azerbaijan consisted of the State Committee for Securities, the National Depositary Center, and the Baku Stock Exchange. USAID, International Financial Corporation, World Bank, International Monetary Fund, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, TACIS, SECO, GTZ, and TIKA were among the participating donor organizations.

The main purpose of the meeting was to present important initiatives supporting Azerbaijan’s securities market development and properly coordinate ongoing and future activities of donor organizations providing technical assistance in this sphere. Discussions covered the status of technical assisnance projects, as well as functional and organizational considerations for expanded cooperation in capital market development.
