USAID Awards $10.2 Million Contract to Increase Rural Incomes in Bolivia

WASHINGTON, DC - The U.S. Agency for International Development announced today it has awarded a $10.2 million contract to promote agricultural development and improve the incomes of rural families in the impoverished valleys and Altiplano regions of Bolivia. This contract falls under the second phase of the USAID Market Access and Poverty Alleviation Project.
The program, part of the U.S. government's bilateral cooperation program to Bolivia, will enhance the production and marketing techniques for products such as hot peppers, chilies, peanuts, grapes, peaches, oregano, flowers, onions and berries. This effort builds upon successful activities under the first phase of the program, which worked with 22,000 families in the valley region.
A total of $9.2 million from the current award will be used for new activities under that framework, while the remaining amount will support the institutional strengthening of the Valleys Foundation, which has worked for the last five years in a productive partnership with the Bolivian Government and USAID to improve the incomes of rural farmers.
The second phase of the program began on October 1 and will deepen productive and agricultural chains of exports, not only from the valleys, but also from the Altiplano region.
The award is part of the Mission's ongoing cooperation with Bolivia, which amounts to approximately $100 million in assistance per year. Along with increasing incomes of Bolivian poor, USAID also supports licit economy growth in coca growing and associated areas; managing forest, water and biodiversity resources; improving the health of Bolivians; and increasing confidence in democratic institutions and processes.
