USAID's Acting Administrator to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month Festivities at DC's Hubbard Place Community Center

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Agency for International Development's (USAID) Acting Administrator Alonzo Fulgham, along with representatives from USAID's Latin America and Caribbean Bureau, will participate in a Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration at the Hubbard Place Community Center, located at 3500 14th Street NW, Washington DC, on Oct. 5, from 3 to 5 p.m.
In his "United We Serve" Initiative, President Barack Obama called upon all Americans to create meaningful change in their communities and volunteer their services. Throughout the summer, USAID employees have volunteered through a number of projects, including a blood drive with the Armed Services Blood Bank Center to support our troops serving overseas. The event at Hubbard Place demonstrates USAID's ongoing commitment to volunteerism and community service in the Washington D.C. area.
Through partnering with Somerset and Hubbard Place, USAID staff will be able to volunteer their time and apply their skills and expertise on a D.C. community development project. Volunteers will participate in regular education and cultural events in conjunction with the after-school program at the Hubbard Place Community Center.
Fulgham is slated to speak at 4:30 and he will be accompanied at the celebration by USAID employees who specialize in the Latin America and the Caribbean region. USAID will set up a display table with cultural artifacts, costumes and maps to help the children and other participants get a better understanding of Central America.
Ward 1 Councilmember Jim Graham and Acting Executive Director of the Latin American Youth Center Mai Fernandez will also deliver remarks. Hubbard Place and Somerset are arranging to have live music and an array of Hispanic foods.
